Altice Portugal\u2019s strategy throughout the years has been to invest heavily and continuously in technological innovation \u2013 and, contrary to what one might think, this isn\u2019t restricted to the telecoms sector. Nevertheless, the group\u2019s historical investment in developing these infrastructures helped put Portugal at the forefront in Europe as regards coverage. The country boasts \u201cfibre optic coverage in 91% of Portuguese homes\u201d, way above the current European average of 56%. \u201cIn terms of physical technological infrastructures, Portugal is in a better position than most countries in Europe\u201d, said Ana Figueiredo during the Altice International Innovation Award ceremony.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
According to the CEO, these figures \u2013 alongside a 93% coverage by high-capacity networks \u2013 have contributed greatly to the country\u2019s technological transformation.\u201d But more than that, these investments serve as a vital foundation to leverage the innovation ecosystem which, as she points out, helps to \u201cpromote Portugal\u2019s competitiveness.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\u201cIn developing this strategy, we feel it\u2019s vital to create an ecosystem which is favourable to the development and operation of these technology hubs and also, of course, to attracting investment leveraged on simplified administration and regulation, on retaining skills and talent.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
To this end, it is crucial to keep strengthening a close relationship between \u201cacademia and research centres\u201d, as well as startups, in an \u201cecosystem which we also need to be entrepreneurial.\u201d Speaking with S\u00e1bado, Ana Figueiredo acknowledges that the success achieved by Altice Labs, the group\u2019s fighting force focused on innovation, comes from a trifecta: the link between the academy, companies and the startups ecosystem. \u201cIt is the academy that breeds knowledge and excellence, which can then be applied within a corporate or industrial context.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Ana Figueiredo underscores the importance of initiatives such as the Altice International Innovation Award in ensuring investment for new technology-based ideas, and looks back on the AIIA\u2019s seven-year history. \u201cThese awards basically aim to reward and support tech-based initiatives relating to digital inclusion and accessibility and also relating to searching for better solutions to problems facing society and companies.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Over their seven years of existence, these awards have received over 600 applications from Portuguese and overseas entrepreneurs, resulting in 17 winning projects, \u201ctotalling an investment of over half a million euros\u201d. This year\u2019s ideas pitched to the jury panel were based on \u201cthe latest innovative technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented reality, 5G and the internet of things.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
